The Blair Witch Project was based on a true story. They found the Footage in the forest the kids where thought to be filming. They made a movie about it. The movie isn't actual footage.
Well there were salem witch trials, and that was much like that movie, but innocent people died just because they practiced witch craft, and they were good witches not bad ones.
