Is a Blair Witch Project based on a true story?

I've found some sites that say it is and some that say it isn't. I just wanna know if that really happened. Is a Blair Witch Project based on a true story?
No. I've seen a documentary, which had the producer and everyone making comments, and it was all set up. Nothing about it was real. The effects were done by staff, for example, scaring the living daylights out of the actors. Is a Blair Witch Project based on a true story?
No, its horror fiction promoted as a true story to increase the level of scariness. This promotional technique is not new, it actually goes back to the 1800 when it was used to promote a stage production of 'Sweeny Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street'.

Here are some other fictional stories which were promoted as true.

';Amityville Horror'; , ';Texas Chainsaw Massacre';, ';War of the Worlds';, ';Mothman Prophecies';, and ';A Haunting in Connecticut';
this is to correct wusuboy001

Most of the movies you mention are based in fact:

Amityville horror is based on a real case that took place in Amityville NY of a family that moved into a house where Ronald Defeco Jr murdered six family members about 15 months earlier claiming paranormal activity made him do it.They also reported paranormal activity this is what the movie is based on.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is based loosely on Ed Gein who was convicted of killing two women in Wisconsin, also he dug up bodies, skinned them and made lampshades of them or he would actually wear the skins. The movie Psycho is based on him.The Remake was hyped as a true story to promote the movie

War of the world is based on a H.G Wells book which Orson Well made famous on Oct.31,1938 in which caused wide spread panic in NJ and NY area.

Mothman Prophecies is based on sightings of a man-sized moth like creature that preceded the collapse of the Silver bridge in Point Pleasant W.Va. It is thought that he either warns of disaster or causes it, some even think he is an angel

A haunting in Connecticut is based on an actual reported haunting in Litchfield Ct where a family moved into a former funeral home, this is also a popular local legend

As you can see there is some truth in movies, along with a lot of hype

So believe what you like, either way it makes for interesting entertainment
Not real. Clever promotional technique later named ';viral';, it was basically the idea of intentionally spreading 'secret' rumor, and leaking items on the internet. And there were stunts and surprises pulled on the cast by the production team to elicit real on-camera emotional response. The kids in the cast were pretty good dupes, too -- quickly falling into fighting with one another instead of sticking together so that they could survive.

I guess the first example I heard of this promotional technique was the opening of the famous NY disco Studio 54 back in 1977 where they kept the doors locked and let none of the people on the street inside. The crowds grew and grew because everyone was SURE there was something spectactular going on, when in fact the place was empty.

By the time they actually let people in, the buzz filled the place for years -- and the crowds still filled the streets, but by that time because it was actually packed. Same result for the actual release of 'Blair Witch'.

For my money, 'Blair Witch' remains one of the best horror films, and a terrific document in terms of social commentary as well. Know what I mean?
No that was one film promoted in an entirely differnt way.

If you read about it..before releasing the film..they claimed the film is a collection of actual shots of the trio on thier handycam

which obviouslyw as not true

I personally dint like the film...but it became a hit due to the innovative promotion
