Can someone please explain this in simplest terms? What is the difference between project north and true north?
you have two totally different answers
True North is the center of rotation of the earth, and is the ';North Pole';. It's where the lines of longitude meet. Also known as geographic north.
Magnetic North is where the compass points, and it is not the same as true north, although close, and it moves from year to year.
project North, I've never heard of, and neither has the internet.
.What is the difference between project north and true north?
Ok true North is the Earth's rotational axis.
Magnetic North is a local deviation angle between true North and an indication on a magnetic compass. And local it is! The only way to know true North using a magnetic compass is to have an up- to- date map of the area you are in. Maps are marked with an angle that has to be added to or subtracted from a magnetic reading to determine with reasonable accuracy where true North is.
The longitude lines on a map are drawn with true North alignment.
On an aero map, also often drawn are the lines of magnetic flux. These can change direction across a single map, by quite substantial amounts.
The correction angle for any particular place on the map is the angle between the magnetic flux lines and the longitudinal lines.
The correction angle marked on the map is the average difference across the coverage of the map.
A gyro compass indicates true North.
Project north sets north in relation to that you have on a map. That is basically the north at which all the longitude lines meet in the arctic. (Look on a map for reference if you don't know what I mean) True north is the magnetic north pole which compasses point to if you were so inclined to use one. True north, or the magnetic north pole, is always moving and doesn't stay in one place. Over time it shifts from place to place. True north and project north are basically not in the same place.
True North and South is the axis of earth rotation
Magnetic North is close to there but not exactly and it moves.
Hope this properly answers your question
