It is fiction.
It's a fake, but a very clever one. I think that this film should win some sort of award based solely on its marketing; a lot of the film's budget was spent on creating this elaborate scenario (the website, for example, or the ';documentary'; that was shown on the sci-fi channel about the Blair witch). However, if you watch until the very end of the credits, there is a disclaimer (in small print, but a disclaimer nonetheless) that explains that the film is, in fact, fiction. The directors' commentary on the DVD also repeats these claims, as well as revealing how exactly the scenes were shot. And if you look on the actors' profiles on IMDB, you'll see that they've been in several other films/television shows since Blair Witch.
it is fake....but much better if you watch it with you knowing that
Is a very well done movie. All the actors are alive and kicking it somewhere with the money they made on this budget film.
It's fake. The girl (Heather Donahue) has appeared in other movies after that one.

It's a fascinating movie, but it's all false. However, you should check the website and read up on it, because it is a neat story.

it's fake, although i saw it when it first came out in limited release and i thought it was real.
